Stresses Me Out!

So I took Boston to the pediatric dentist today and things are even worse than what we thought. One maybe two of the teeth need more than just fillings...they need crowns because the decay is so bad. How did this happen? Did I do something wrong? Anyway the dentist was really cool...he reassured me that I was a good mom. He said this could be caused by several things such as genetics (I knew I passed on my bad teeth), diet, or a defect in his enamel. He said he felt like the best option for Boston's sake would be to do it as an outpatient surgery and put him under. That way they could do everything all at once and keep everything as positive for Boston as possible. It would definitely beat taking him in 4 or 5 times and having him go through all of that...even if he does seem to handle it pretty well right now. I agree with the dentist...I don't want all of this to become a negative experience for Boston, but man I just know that this is not going to be cheap. We are going to be looking at a dental bill, anesthesia bill, and a hospital bill....all for some BABY TEETH that he will LOOSE. Ugh. Why can't he just leave it and wait till he looses the teeth you ask? Well he will need those teeth till he is at least 12 and they are the most important ones for chewing and eating. Jared keeps telling me to quit stressin and get used to it. "He will probably break an arm, or knock out some teeth....we will be paying medical and dental bills as long as we have kids!" I know it is true....I just didn't think it would start this early. All I can say is that you better believe that I am already brushing Tayden's little teeth morning and night now. We are going to prevent this from happening again if at all possible.

Jared's comment is EXACTLY what Chris would say to me in that situation. Moms freak out too much. It's a good thing Dads are around to keep us ladies cool.

I have always started brushing my kids teeth right when they come in...and I let them carry a tooth brush around....but I have been SOOOOO bad....BAD...Bad since this pregnancy started!! I guess I'd better get my rear in gear or I may end up doing just what you are. Sorry girly.

If the bill is going to be huge I would seriously consider getting a second opinion. Some dentists are far more inclined to do radical dentistry on baby teeth than other dentists. I'm not saying that your dentist is trying to rip you off, but dentists have bills to pay too. If a dentist can get you to pay for work that isn't strictly necessary then that's money in his or her pocket.

Now, I don't know how jacked up Boston's teeth are, but if my dentist were talking to me about general anesthesia and a hospital stay I would want to see some other dentist just to make sure he wasn't crazy.

I am so sorry! Poor Boston. I know Jared is right, and it is the same thing Collin would say, but you are a worryer like me, and I know hearing that doesn't necessarily make it any easier!

Hey there girly! That is sucky for little Boston! I've been working as a dental assistant for the past 2 years almost...and I hate to say it but if he has 2 teeth that are going to need crowns and a few other teeth that will need fillings, then anesthesia is probably the best option for him due to his age. We do general anesthesia at our office and it really is not that bad! The kid goes to sleep, gets ALL of his work done, then wakes up! I'm just wondering where the hospital bill comes into play?!? Yes there is that handful of dentists and doctors that try to rip you off, but like you said you went to a pediatric dentist...Im sure he knows! :) Good luck with that and sorry I wrote you a novel...just helping you from the other side's point of view! :) :)
